The Tennis Book A Comprehensive Illustrated Guide to World Tennis John Parsons 9781780978383 Books Reviews
Gave this as a gift to my 86 year old mother who still plays doubles tennis several times a week. She loves this book and said it is full of very interesting information and great photos. Several of her tennis friends have asked to borrow her copy. This is a great gift selection for any tennis fan.
Intoxicating blend of tennis nuances and powerful body of work but did notice a number of inaccuracies. On page 23 It was claimed Caroline Wozniacki rise to World No. 1 was in 2011 which is actually INCORRECT. Wozniacki achieved the World No. 1 ranking in Oct. 2010 and achieved the season-ending No. 1 ranking in 2010. On page 36 It was claimed Vera Zvonareva made three Grand Slam finals, Wimbledon in 2010, 2011 and the US Open in 2010 which is actually INCORRECT. The Russian Zvonareva was beaten third-round at Wimbledon in 2011. On page 50 It was claimed Ivan Lendl had lost five Slam finals before his 1984 French Open championship decider with John McEnroe which is actually INCORRECT. Lendl had previously lost only four Slam finals, the 1981 French Open final, the 1982 and 1983 US Open finals and the 1983 Australian Open final. On page 61 It was claimed Pam Shriver was runner-up at the 1978 US Open when still 15 which is actually INCORRECT. Shriver was 16 years 2 months at the time. On page 64 It was claimed at the ATP Tour Championships in 2002 Lleyton Hewitt, the tournament winner, finished with a 5-0 record which is actually INCORRECT. Hewitt lost a match to Spains Carlos Moya in round-robin competition. Also On page 64 It was claimed at the ATP Tour Championships Boris Becker on two occasions and Roger Federer on two occasions had won the title despite losing a match in round-robin competition which is actually INCORRECT. Becker won the title despite losing a match in round-robin competition on three occasions in 1988,1992 and 1995 and Federer won the title despite losing a match in round-robin competition on only one occasion which was in 2007. On page 75 It was claimed Bjorn Borg was without a slam title to his name following his 1981 Wimbledon and US Open final defeats to John McEnroe which is actually INCORRECT. Borg had won the 1981 French Open. On page 93 It was claimed Bjorn Borg went on to win seven titles overall at Roland Garros which is actually INCORRECT. Borg won six times at Roland Garros 1974-75 and 1978-1981. On page 110 It was claimed Novak Djokovic 41-match winning streak in 2011 was broken by Rafael Nadal at the semi-final stage of the French Open which is actually INCORRECT. Swiss player Roger Federer ended the Djokovic winning streak in 2011 by defeating the Serbian at the semi-final stage of the French Open. On page 114 It was claimed Mardy Fish improved after 2010 and achieved his best semi-final Slam result at Wimbledon which is actually INCORRECT. Fish never progressed beyond the quarter-finals at Slams, achieving this at the Australian Open in 2007, US Open in 2008 and Wimbledon in 2011. On page 123 It was claimed Petr Korda won in New Haven in 1991, the same year he also reached the final of the French Open which is actually INCORRECT. Korda was the beaten finalist in 1992 at the French Open losing to Jim Courier. Also On page 123 It was claimed Johan Kriek was twice a semi-finalist at the French Open which is actually INCORRECT. The South African-born player was a semi-finalist in 1986 losing to Ivan Lendl and in his two other appearances at Roland Garros lost in the first round. On page 129 It was claimed Gene Mayer won three Slam doubles titles, twice at the French Open and at Wimbledon in 1980 which is actually INCORRECT. Gene Mayer never won the Wimbledon mens doubles title. His older brother Sandy did however achieve the honour, winning the title with Vitas Gerulaitis in 1975. On page 137 It was claimed in 1997, Pat Rafters US Open triumph made him the first Australian to win in New York since Mark Edmondson in 1976 which is actually INCORRECT. John Newcombe in 1973 was the last Australian before Rafter to win the US Open championship when he beat Czech player Jan Kodes in the final. On page 145 It was claimed Robin Soderling defeated Rafael Nadal in the 2009 French Open semi-finals to hand the Spaniard his first loss at Roland Garros which is actually INCORRECT. Soderlings win over the Spaniard was in the fourth round of the 2009 tournament, the scoreline reading 62 67 64 76.
Both the people I gave this to really loved it. As they were big tennis fans it was greatly appreciated.
